The case of the death of Canan Akbulut who consulted Mor Çatı about a year ago because of the violence she was subjected to by her husband, was resumed on the 4th of October. The partner, Edip Akbulut, has a pending accusation of homicide.

Violence inflicted to women because of their social gender and women killings are considered political issues therefore Mor Cati’s request to intervene in the case shoud have been accepted. However the request was rejected by the Tribunal. The lawyers from Mor Çatı representing Canan Akbulut’s family, volunteers, feminists showing solidarity took part in the trial.

One year ago, we were shaken by the news of the death of our applicant Canan Akbulut. Canan suffered violence by her husband and wanted a divorce. While getting assistance from Mor Çatı she was as well struggling to create a life free from violence for herself and her 4 years old son. When we learned that she lost her life falling from the balcony of the house she was living in, we argued that the perpetrator of the violent act is her husband.

The public prosecutor who prepared the indictment shared our opinion and demanded a life sentence for Edip Akubulut on the grounds of intentional killing.

For sure the was violence in the relationship but no tangible evidence of it, only witness statements regarding the violence committed by her husband. Some of the participants in Muge Anli program stated that they witnessed Canan being pushed down the balcony.

The 9th Bakırköy Criminal Court decided to listen to the testimonies recorded during the program and delay the hearing to the 1st of February 2010 at 10 a.m. The feminists following the hearing in order to fight violence against women agreed on meeting on the same date and on renewing once more the claim that Canan’s homicide shall not be left unpunished.
